Chapter Four

Julian's rooms were quite chic for someone who implied that he had an intermittent income stream. Not that Shax would complain. Opulent surroundings were never a hardship. But it did make him curious about Julian's occupational choices and about whether he might share contacts.

"Drink? Since we cut the bar visit short?" Julian asked as he threw open an excellent quality faux wood cabinet on the far wall. Crystal and liquids in various shades glittered from its interior.

"Scotch, if you have a decent one? Absinthe otherwise."

Julian's bright smile never faltered as he poured two fingers of each into separate glasses and set them on a side table beside the overstuffed couch. He poured a bit of vodka for himself and kicked off his boots before he settled in the crook opposite Shax. "Personal question time. Are you attracted exclusively to conventional males?"

Though the mask stayed in place, Shax heard the tiny quaver in the words, the bare hint of vulnerability. He was certain he knew why, but humans had odd anger triggers sometimes. Best to tread lightly. "Hmm. I've certainly bedded every human gender, normally to get something I wanted. But I'm most attracted to all things masculine, which leaves me with a lovely range of possibilities."

"Oh, you're good. Very good," Julian said softly as he twirled his glass between his hands. "I have to ask. Safety precaution. Some men's expectations are, ah, let's say rigid."

Shax held back a snicker in case the pun was unintentional. "I really thought spacers would be more rather than less open-minded than folks in the home system."

"It's the pockets of isolation. You get all sorts of backward sorts out here." Julian took a sip and licked his lips slowly. "Haven't been out here long, have you?"

"Long enough to have had my pride stomped on. Still finding my niche." Shax shrugged out of his coat and took a moment to pull off his boots before he started on his scotch.

"Best of luck with that. Take some advice?"

"Of course."

"Keep your promises. Unless you lied. Only be an asshole when your escape route is foolproof. And don't get shot."

Shax nearly choked on a sip. "Ha! Advice I'll do my best to follow. I think I like you." He stopped for a more careful sip, matching Julian's dark eyes smolder for smolder.

Julian stood to undo the magnetic tab fastenings on his shirt. Though his eyes never left Shax's, a bit of bravado accompanied the heat now. Shirt and jacket hit the floor together with a heavy, metallic thud and an apologetic shrug from their owner. It was apparently a given that if one went out in New Bangkok, one went armed. Whatever Julian was carrying sounded serious and Shax respected that.

Arms spread, torso bared in all its lean, hard splendor, Julian waited with his weight shifted onto the balls of his feet, perhaps still unsure whether Shax's next move would be a caress or an attack. If their oblique conversation hadn't made it clear before, Julian had done so now by boldly displaying his top surgery scars like a challenge.
